Oil Palm (Elaeis guinensis)


A tree, native to tropical Africa. Work on the plantations of this palm is reported to
have been started in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala. Tree produces two distinct oils, palm oil and palm kernel oil. Palm oil is obtained from fleshy mesocarp of fruit, while palm kernel-oil is obtained from kernel or endosperm. Palm oil is used for edible purposes, including manufacture of cooking fats. Palm kernel oil, besides, being used for edibel purposes, is also utilized in manufacture of detergents and toilet soaps. Press cake, after
extraction of oil from kernels. is an important live stock feed. Sap obtained by tapping male inflorescene, is utilized for making alcoholic drink and leaves ar used for thatching.
