Cocoa (Theobroma cacao)
A small tree native to tropical Amercia and is now cultivated in South India and
Orissa. Sceds are source of non-alcoholic beverage and are also used in confectionery.
Cocoa butter, obtained from seeds is uscd in preparation of chocolates, and in cosmetics,
prefumery, as lubricant, for massaging and base for ointments. Shells, which are hy-
products of cacao-processing industry, are used as conditioners for commericai fertilizers or as fuel. Shells are also used for extracting theobromine which possesses diuretic properties and also acts as myocardial stimulant and smooth muscle-relaxant.
